KALPANA SAROJ: From the Edges of Society to the Heart of Enterprise

Born in 1961 in Roperkheda, a small village in Maharashtra, Kalpana Saroj’s early life was marked by hardship and discrimination. Belonging to a Dalit family, she faced social exclusion from a young age. At just twelve, she was married off and sent to Mumbai, where she endured an abusive marriage and crushing poverty. After being rescued by her father, she returned home, determined to rebuild her life from the ground up.

Kalpana began working in a garment factory, saving every rupee she could. She later took a government loan under the Mahila Udyog scheme and started a small furniture business. That decision marked the beginning of her transformation. Her sharp instincts, relentless work ethic, and quiet courage turned small ventures into major successes. Over time, she expanded into real estate, film production, and industry, eventually taking over the struggling Kamani Tubes company and reviving it into a profitable enterprise.

Her story is not just one of economic success but of human resilience. She became a symbol of what grit and self-belief can achieve against all odds. In 2013, she was awarded the Padma Shri for Trade and Industry, a recognition of her contribution to business and her role as a trailblazer for women and marginalized communities in India.

Kalpana Saroj’s life reminds us that where one begins does not define where one can go. Her journey from child bride to industrialist is a testament to courage, second chances, and the strength to rewrite one’s story.
