MANOJ KUMAR SHARMA: When Failure Became The First Step to Flight

 


Manoj Kumar Sharma’s story is a testament to resilience and the belief that one’s past does not define one’s future. Born in a small village in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, he grew up in a modest family where resources were scarce but dreams were abundant. His early years in school were marked by repeated setbacks. He failed in classes 9, 10, and 11, and barely passed class 12. Many would have accepted defeat, but Sharma refused to let failure close the door on his aspirations.

Determined to change his life, he moved to Gwalior and took up odd jobs to support himself while preparing for competitive exams. There were days when he slept on the floor of a library because he had no place to stay. He read voraciously, especially works that built his moral courage. Books such as Maxim Gorky’s “Mother” inspired him to persist despite the odds.

After years of relentless preparation, Sharma cracked the Union Public Service Commission exam and joined the Indian Police Service. Today, he serves as an officer known for his integrity and people-centered approach to policing. His journey from an academically struggling teenager to a senior IPS officer has become a source of motivation for countless aspirants.

Sharma’s life has also been portrayed in the 2023 Hindi film 12th Fail, which brought his struggles and triumphs to a wider audience. His story is not only about clearing one of the toughest exams in India but also about proving that perseverance can turn adversity into achievement. -Samidha Kalra
