SANGHAMITRA BANDYOPADHYAY: The Quiet Brilliance of Intelligence

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay’s story is one of determination, intellect, and a commitment to breaking barriers. Born and raised in India, she pursued her education in a field where women have often been underrepresented. Her journey began with a fascination for mathematics and patterns, which gradually grew into a deep passion for computer science and artificial intelligence. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” a sentiment that reflects Sanghamitra’s unwavering pursuit of excellence.

She earned her B.Tech in Computer Science from Calcutta University, followed by an M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D. from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). Over the years, she contributed groundbreaking research in areas like genetic algorithms, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Her work has not only pushed the boundaries of computational science but also inspired young researchers, especially women, to pursue careers in STEM.

When the Indian Statistical Institute welcomed its new Director in 2015, history was made as Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay stepped in as the first woman to lead the century-old institution, marking a historic moment. Under her leadership, ISI has expanded its global collaborations and strengthened its role in data-driven research. She has received numerous awards, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, cementing her place among India’s most respected scientists.

Sanghamitra’s life reminds us that brilliance knows no gender and that perseverance can open doors to arenas once thought inaccessible. Her journey is a beacon for those who dream big, work hard, and never stop questioning the world around them. -Samidha Kalra
