R. PAPPAMMAL: Roots That Bloom Beyond A Century

 R. Pappammal, the 105-year-old farmer from Thekkampatti in Tamil Nadu, is a living reminder that passion and purpose have no expiry date. Born in 1916 into a modest family, she grew up in an environment where the rhythm of life was set by the sowing and reaping of crops. For her, agriculture was not simply a livelihood. It was an identity shaped by the smell of wet earth and the cycle of the seasons.

Even in her advanced years, Pappammal could be found walking through her fields, observing the growth of her crops and sharing her knowledge with younger farmers. She became known for embracing scientific farming methods while still preserving the wisdom of traditional practices. This balance allowed her to improve productivity without losing the essence of her heritage. Her approach reflected the Tamil proverb “Uzhavu Thozhil Uthaman,” meaning “Farming is the noblest profession.”

In 2021, her contributions were recognised with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours. Despite the national recognition, she remains grounded, often attributing her success to hard work, community solidarity, and her unbreakable bond with the soil. She once said, “The land gives back in abundance to those who care for it sincerely,” a statement that captures her philosophy as a farmer and as a human being.

Pappammal’s journey is more than the story of a successful farmer. It is the story of resilience, lifelong learning, and the quiet dignity of someone who has nourished both land and people for over a century. Her life stands as an enduring example of how devotion to one’s work can blossom into a legacy that feeds generations. -Samidha Kalra
